Why Visit Laitlum?
Laitlum Canyons — whose name means "End of Hills" in Khasi — is one of the most dramatic and under-visited viewpoints in Meghalaya. Just 28 km from Shillong, the canyon's sheer cliff edges drop hundreds of metres into cloud-filled gorges, with traditional Khasi villages perching impossibly at the edges and terraced farmlands cascading into the mist below.
The landscape here changes with the light and weather — in early morning it can be wrapped in cloud so thick you see nothing, then the mist rolls back to reveal a jaw-dropping expanse of deep valleys, green ridgelines, and distant Bangladesh plains. Monsoon turns the entire canyon into a thundering waterscape; winter brings clarity and cool highland air.
For trekkers, Laitlum's trails wind down through traditional Khasi villages that feel entirely disconnected from modern life. For photographers, it offers some of the most compelling landscape compositions in Northeast India. For anyone seeking silence and scale, Laitlum is one of Meghalaya's finest gifts.
