Why Visit Sela Pass & Bumla?

Sela Pass and Bumla Pass represent two of the most dramatic high-altitude road experiences in India — both accessible from Tawang, both carrying immense strategic and historical weight, and both offering landscape experiences that leave travelers speechless.

Sela Pass, at 13,700 ft, is one of the highest motorable passes in the world and the principal gateway between Assam's foothills and the Tawang valley. A small sacred lake sits beside the road, surrounded by prayer flags and mountain silence. In winter, the pass turns white and treacherous; in spring, the ice melts to reveal alpine grasslands and wildflowers. Regardless of season, the views are extraordinary.

Bumla Pass, at 15,200 ft on the India-China border, is open to Indian tourists with special permits on select days. The LAC here is a place of rare quiet — Indian and Chinese soldiers sometimes exchange pleasantries at a designated meeting point — and the frozen Tibetan plateau stretching away to the north is unlike anything else in India.
